Tris base is often formulated into a variety of buffers in biochemistry and molecular biology. For example, Tris-EDTA (TE buffer), is mostly used for the purification and storage of nucleic acid to protect it from being degraded by nucleases. Tris acetate-EDTA (TAE buffer) and Tris borate-EDTA (TBE buffer) are commonly used as gel preparation buffers as well as running buffers.
